Taboola vs Outbrain is the first decision every performance buyer makes before testing native ads. Both networks place sponsored recommendations below and beside articles on publisher sites, both charge mainly per click and both bid with conversion-based algorithms. The real differences sit in partnerships, formats, minimum budgets, billing and reporting.

Quick answer: Taboola and Outbrain sell the same kind of placement. Choose Taboola if you have a clear CPA target, can fund around 10 times that CPA per day and want Yahoo inventory. Choose Outbrain for a smaller first test, since campaigns start from $20 a day. Most brands that scale native end up running both.

If you have not set up either network yet, our Taboola ads setup guide and Outbrain ads setup guide cover each account step by step. This article stays at the comparison level, and every platform fact comes from Taboola's and Outbrain's own pages, opened on 29 October 2026.

How are the two networks different as companies?

The company behind each network matters because it decides which publisher deals and ad formats you can reach, and how fast the dashboard keeps changing under your team.

Taboola renamed its advertiser product Realize and moved it to a new address; its help centre describes "the migration from ads.taboola.com to ads.realizeperformance.com" (Taboola Ads to Realize). As of October 2026, Taboola's about page lists 9,000 publishers, more than 15,000 advertisers and more than 600 million daily active users. In November 2022 Taboola signed a 30-year, exclusive agreement to "exclusively power native advertising across all of Yahoo's digital properties", which the press release says reach nearly 900 million monthly active users.

Outbrain bought Teads, and the two "combined on February 3, 2025 and are operating under the new Teads brand", according to Teads' announcement. The same post says the new Teads is directly partnered with more than 10,000 publishers and 20,000 advertisers. For feed buyers, the day-to-day tool is still Amplify.

Publisher counts are self-reported and defined differently by each company, so read them as scale indicators, not as a reason to pick one network.

Which ad formats does each network offer?

Both networks started with the classic native unit, a thumbnail plus a headline inside a recommendation feed, and both have added video and display formats on top since then.

Taboola. In Realize you choose between "Native" and "Vertical/ Display" ad types during campaign setup. The vertical and display ads article, dated August 2026, calls them "two new creative types" and names 300x250 and 300x600 as priority sizes. For native units, Taboola's creative best practices put headlines at 35 to 45 characters, with 60 as the maximum.

Outbrain. The Outbrain ad specs page lists Standard Native, Clip, App Install and Carousel under native, Vertical, Pre-Roll and Outstream under video, plus High-Impact Display and a standard banner. Titles can run to 100 characters, with 60 recommended.

For a DTC brand, the native unit still does most of the work on both. Treat video and display as a second step once the native campaign is profitable.

How bidding and budgets compare

Bidding on both networks has moved towards conversion-based algorithms, but Taboola and Outbrain publish different budget guidance, and that guidance decides how much you need on day one.

Taboola lists three strategies on its bid strategy page: Maximize Conversions, "an automated bidding strategy" built on SmartBid with an optional target CPA, Enhanced CPC, which is semi-automated, and Fixed Bid, which "provides full manual control over the cost-per-click". The budget and pacing article says: "The recommended daily budget per campaign is 10 times your CPA goal, or at least $50 USD."

Outbrain runs conversion bidding through Conversion Bid Strategy, with four modes: Semi Manual, Max Conversions, Target CPA and Target ROAS. Outbrain recommends a daily budget of at least 3 times your desired CPA. Its budget and duration page states: "The minimum daily budget you need to create a campaign is 20USD, 20EUR, or 20GBP per day."

In practice, a $40 CPA target means a recommended $400 a day on Taboola and $120 a day on Outbrain. That gap is why many teams test on Outbrain first and move to Taboola once the offer is proven. Our Taboola pricing guide breaks down what drives Taboola's cost per click.

Billing and payment differences

Payment terms differ more than most buyers expect between the two native networks, and they affect cash flow when you scale spend quickly across several accounts.

Taboola's pricing and billing basics describe three routes: automatic billing, where a card is charged at a set increment ("typically $100"), monthly invoicing with an approved credit limit, and prepayment by card or wire transfer.

Outbrain's payment methods page offers automatic billing by card and prepayment by wire, ACH in the US, SEPA in the EU or card. It adds that "Outbrain charges all accounts that pay Credit Card a processing fee of 3%", and supports card payments in EUR, GBP, BRL and USD. Outbrain's billing model page says a failed charge disables the account immediately.

If you fund Outbrain by card, add the 3% fee to your CPA maths. If you scale fast on Taboola, ask about invoicing early, before an automatic billing card hits its limit mid-week.

How tracking and reporting compare

Tracking works the same way on both: a JavaScript pixel for website events, plus a server-to-server postback for conversions the browser cannot see. Taboola passes its own click ID and Outbrain passes ob_click_id, so your server stores both.

Two details differ. Outbrain requires an IAB-compliant consent platform to track EU and UK users with its pixel, and its performance reporting page says spend and conversion data are "subject to a 2-4 hour reporting delay". Taboola's Realize, for its part, emails scheduled reports in CSV only.

Each network also credits itself for the same customer, so Taboola, Outbrain and Meta conversions will add up to more than your store orders. Compare both networks against store orders, not against each other's dashboards. If you report in Looker Studio, our guide to connecting Taboola and Outbrain to Looker Studio covers the options.

Who should choose Taboola, and who should choose Outbrain?

Choosing between Taboola and Outbrain comes down to budget, geography and how much setup time your team has, more than to any difference in the ad unit itself.

Taboola tends to suit:

  • Brands with a proven CPA that can fund around 10 times it per day
  • Advertisers who want Yahoo's inventory, which Taboola powers exclusively
  • Teams that need monthly invoicing on larger budgets

Outbrain tends to suit:

  • Smaller first tests, from $20 a day per campaign
  • Brands that want Target ROAS as a built-in bidding mode
  • Advertisers interested in the wider Teads video and display offer

Run both when native is already profitable on one network and the next step is reach. Both networks are worth a test for most DTC brands spending meaningfully on Meta and Google; the order matters less than tracking both properly. For affiliates and arbitrage teams, our Taboola and Outbrain arbitrage case study covers that model separately.

Running Taboola and Outbrain side by side

Once both networks are live, the work doubles: two dashboards, two pixels, two billing setups and two report formats to reconcile every week, before you even compare native with social.

Wevion connects Taboola and Outbrain next to Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat through each platform's official API, syncs data about every 15 minutes and maps Outbrain's eCPM to CPM, so native spend lines up with social and search in one cross-channel view.

From there you can launch on either network from the bulk launcher, one platform at a time, compare both in cross-channel analytics, and set rules that pause or activate native campaigns on conditions you choose. Wavo, the AI copilot, reads your accounts and proposes changes, and nothing changes until you approve it. If you are weighing native dashboards against a layer on top, our comparison of native ads managers and third-party platforms sets out the trade-offs.
