Ad Account Spending Limit: How It Works on Meta, Google and TikTok

An ad account spending limit is the simplest hard ceiling you can put on ad spend, and one of the most misunderstood. On Meta alone there is an account spending limit, a campaign spending limit and a daily spending limit set by Meta, and none of them behaves like a budget. Mixing them up is how ads pause on a Saturday morning, or how a test account spends far more than anyone intended.
Quick answer: On Meta, an account spending limit caps total spend across all campaigns over the account's lifetime and pauses ads when reached. It does not reset on its own. A campaign spending limit caps one campaign. A daily spending limit is applied by the platform, not by you. Budgets are targets; spending limits are the hard stops.
Budgets and limits work together. If you already pace budgets carefully, our budget pacing guide covers the daily side; this guide covers the ceilings above it.
What is an ad account spending limit on Meta?
Meta defines the account spending limit as a cap on the amount an ad account can spend on all of its campaigns over its lifetime, and it is the only spending control that covers the whole account. Its rules are spread across several help pages:
- Ads pause at the limit. When the limit is reached, ads are paused and stop spending. You can resume them by updating the limit, removing it or resetting the amount spent.
- It does not reset by itself. The amount spent toward the limit does not reset automatically after any period of time.
- Admins manage it. Meta's removal guide requires admin access on the ad account.
- Not for manual payments. Account spending limits are not available on ad accounts set up for manual payments.
- Changes take about 15 minutes to apply.
- The spent figure is an estimate. Meta's spending limit history notes that results can take up to 48 hours to be fully processed, so leave a margin.
The lifetime design is the part that catches people out. A limit you set as "this month's budget" keeps counting into next month unless someone resets it.

Account limit, daily limit and budgets compared
Meta uses the word "limit" for several different controls, and knowing which one paused your ads saves time you would otherwise spend on the wrong fix:
| Control | Who sets it | Scope | What happens at the cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account spending limit | You (admin) | All campaigns, lifetime | All ads pause |
| Campaign spending limit | You | One campaign | That campaign's ad sets and ads stop |
| Daily spending limit | Meta | The account, per day | Ads pause |
| Daily budget | You | Campaign or ad set | Not a hard cap; works as an average |
| Lifetime budget | You | Campaign or ad set | Spend spread across the schedule |
A campaign spending limit caps one campaign; when it is reached, the campaign's ad sets and ads stop and Meta sends a notification. You can edit it in Ads Manager, and changes take about 15 minutes.
Meta also applies daily spending limits of its own to some accounts. You do not set these, and Meta's billing help notes that a payment threshold is different from a daily spending limit: if ads pause unexpectedly, a daily spending limit may be why. Budgets are different again. Meta's pricing overview describes a daily budget as an average, and says spend on a given day can run above it while the week evens out.
How to set, change, reset or remove a Meta account spending limit
Managing the Meta account spending limit happens in Payment settings rather than in the campaign editor, and every change needs an admin on the ad account. The steps:
- Open Billing and payments in Ads Manager and go to Payment settings.
- Find the Account spending limit section and open the three-dot menu.
- Choose the action you need. Set or change the limit to a new amount, reset the amount spent so counting starts from zero, or remove the limit entirely.
- Wait about 15 minutes for the change to take effect, then confirm delivery has resumed.
- Check the history under Billing to see past limits and changes if you need to explain a pause to a client.
Resetting and raising solve different problems. Reset when you use the limit as a recurring monthly ceiling. Raise it when the account genuinely needs more room, ideally with the client's sign-off written down.
What about Google Ads and TikTok?
Google and TikTok both cap spend, but neither works exactly like Meta's account spending limit, so it is worth checking what each platform actually documents before you rely on it.
Google Ads. Campaign budgets are averages. Google says a campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget on a given day, and its spending limits page sets the monthly ceiling at 30.4 times the average daily budget. Separately, Google can apply an account-level daily spending limit to new accounts, accounts with recent changes, flagged accounts or accounts pending verification. That limit overrides campaign budgets, ads resume the next day, and you cannot request an increase; it may rise or be removed over time. Account budgets exist too, for advertisers on monthly invoicing.
Google's appetite for caution is easy to understand. Its 2025 Ads Safety Report, published in April 2026, says Google blocked or removed over 8.3 billion ads and suspended 24.9 million advertiser accounts in 2025. Daily limits on new accounts are one of the ways it manages that risk.
TikTok. TikTok's guide to budgets describes daily and lifetime budgets at the campaign and ad group level. Campaign budgets must be over $50 and daily ad group budgets over $20, and a lifetime budget will not be exceeded by the end of the campaign. TikTok also advises against changing budgets more often than every two days. We did not find a Meta-style account spending limit on that page, so treat campaign lifetime budgets as your ceiling.
When should you use a spending limit as a safety net?
A spending limit earns its place wherever an overspend would hurt more than a pause, which covers more situations than most media buyers use it for. Good candidates:
- New or test accounts, where you want a firm ceiling while you learn how the account behaves.
- Client accounts with an agreed monthly cap, reset on the first of each month and documented.
- Accounts where contractors or junior buyers have access, so a mistaken budget edit cannot run far.
- Peak periods, when you raise budgets fast and want a backstop. Our BFCM 2026 paid social checklist covers raising limits before the rush.
The trade-off is that a limit stops everything when it is hit, including your best campaigns. A pause on a Friday night can cost more than the overspend it prevented, so a limit works best with an early warning set well below it.
Wevion connects your Meta, Google, TikTok, Taboola, Snapchat and Outbrain ad accounts through each platform's official API with OAuth and syncs data about every 15 minutes, so spend across all of them sits in one dashboard where you can see an account closing in on its limit before delivery stops.
Alerts and automation rules can watch spend against thresholds you choose, then pause a campaign or just send you an alert, a pattern we cover in ad spend cap automation rules and guardrails to scale ad spend safely. The platform limit stays the hard stop; the alert gives you time to decide first.
Key takeaways
Spending limits are hard ceilings, budgets are targets, and knowing which control paused your ads is half the fix.
- Meta's account spending limit covers all campaigns over the account's lifetime, pauses ads when reached and never resets on its own.
- Campaign spending limits cap one campaign; daily spending limits are set by the platform, not by you.
- Google can apply an account-level daily limit that overrides campaign budgets and cannot be raised on request.
- On TikTok, campaign and ad group lifetime budgets are the closest documented ceiling.
- Pair every hard limit with an earlier alert, and reset monthly limits on a schedule.
